Buoyancy

Buoyancy

Buoyancy is an upward force that fluids exert on an object

Finding Buoyancy Force

This force is equal to the weight of the fluid displaced (moved out of the way) by the object

Buoyancy and Floating

An object will float when the weight of the displaced fluid is greater than or equal to the weight of the object.

Example Problem

One ml of water has a mass of one gram.

If an object has a mass of 15 grams and displaces 17 milliliters of water, will it float?

Answer

The weight of the water is greater than the mass of the object.

   Therefore, the object will float.
