Lakeview Junior High offers a standards-based Physical Education program. As with any core class, there are state and national standards for Physical Education in place for which physical education instructors are held accountable. The Lakeview Physical Education Department prides itself on addressing the needs of the whole child by focusing on the three areas of total health…Mind, Body, and Character. We believe that these three components are dependent upon one another and one cannot work independently and be successful without the others. We believe all three components contribute to the Total Health of a child.

Assessments and grading are age old ways of holding students accountable for what they know and what they can do. By weighting our grades we are making it very possible for a child to be successful in a variety of areas. The next figure is a visual representation of how much assignments are worth in the overall grade.

If for example, a child is “approaching standard” (or low test scores) in one area such as Fitness Test scores, it will not be devastating to their overall grade. The Fitness Test scores only make up a small percentage of the 40% of the overall grade. See adjacent figure:

As you can see in this example, Fitnessgram Test Scores are not a huge factor in determining a student’s grade. However, as with all classes across the board, students’ grades are based on performance. So, we assess students on all areas of performance that relate to Mind, Body, and Character.

We continuously challenge students to improve physically, mentally, and socially and provide numerous opportunities for them to improve and be successful.

It is our hope that this handout helps to clarify some of the confusion regarding the way we grade in our Physical Education classes. This is our policy. Please feel free to contact any of us for further clarification as we are here to help in any way we can!

Some Helpful Suggestions

1.     Check the website: www.lakeviewjhs.net to see what was covered in class on any given day, what assignments were given, due dates, etc. (This is also a good way to see what was missed in the event of an absence.)

2.     The following assignments are now posted on the Lakeview website: Character Logs, Fitness Logs, Fitness Focuses, and Illness/Injury Forms (see website link above).

3.     Grades are typically posted on Mondays on the Fitness Center windows. Please come check them out yourself or ask your child.

4.     Check your child’s assignment book regularly.

5.     Email your child’s teacher with any questions, comments or concerns. Email addresses are the first letter of first name followed by last name @orcutt-schools.net (For example: wvanallen@orcutt-schools.net)
