1. State law requires that a student be in school, unless prevented by illness or matters of the court. 2. Parents, please notify the school on the day your child is absent. (After hour attendance number is 938-8600.) Please use this number between the hours of 4:00 p.m. and 8:30 a.m. If your child is not in school, you will be notified by telephone to verify the absence. Please be sure emergency numbers are correct. 3. Truancy is an unexcused absence and a violation of state law. One demerit and/or detention will be issued for every class period cut. Four or more truancies per year may lead to parent and student accountability to the District Attorney’s office under Section 46010 of the Education Code. 4. Students who are absent on the day of an activity may not attend or participate in an after school activity such as dances or games. Detention is from 3:30 p.m. to 4:15 p.m. in Room 27. Detention is given at Lakeview for behavioral issues or to students who are habitually unprepared for class. Each day of detention carries a demerit. After the accumulation of five (5) demerits in one quarter a student may not participate in school sponsored functions that quarter (see Loss Of Privileges section).
1. A homework referral requiring a parent signature is given for academic reasons such as being unprepared for class; lack of essential supplies, incomplete class/homework assignment(s) or missing assignment(s). Repeated failure to be prepared for class may result in a demerit detention. 2. A demerit detention is given for inappropriate actions. The following are some common reasons for detention: a. Late to school h. Lunch/Cafeteria misbehavior b. Late to class i. Cut Detention c. Cut class/school (6 classes) j. Problems with relationships d. Defiance of authority k. Eating out of designated areas, chewing gum e. Disturbed class l. Uncooperative attitude f. Disrespectful/rude behavior m. Dress code violation g. Away from assigned area n. Progress Report/signature required forms not in Detention Guidelines 1. Students must bring a signed slip to detention. If the detention slip that was given is lost, a note from a parent/guardian that states the reason detention was given and by whom will suffice. Failure to have a signed detention or a note will result in the student not being allowed to serve that day and the student will receive another detention. 2. If more than one detention is received on one day, they must be served on consecutive days. 3. Detention is at 8:00 a.m. sharp; anyone arriving late will receive an additional demerit. A parent may walk a student to detention if they are no later than 5 minutes, thus avoiding an additional detention. Students are released at 8:45 a.m., giving them time to contact a teacher for academic help before classes begin. 4. Students must bring homework and/or school-related reading materials to detention. Drawing, writing notes or other non-school related activities are not allowed. 5. No excuses for non-attendance or tardiness. 6. Students are not allowed to talk during detention. If there is a question or problem, the student must raise his/her hand. Failure to comply may result in another detention or a loss of activity privileges. 7. All school rules apply in detention. 8. Failure to serve detention: 1st offense - student is issued a second detention unless parent contacts school with a valid excuse by 10:00 am on the day the detention was to be served (the student now needs to serve the next two days in a row for the initial detention). 2nd offense - student will be suspended and receive 3 additional demerits. 9. Each day of demerit detentions counts as a demerit on a student’s permanent school record and affects student participation in school sponsored activities.
1. A student should be placed in Mandatorial only if they have an F grade in the class and there is opportunity to improve this grade. Once placed on the Mandatorial list the student must serve the entire week. 2. When a student is placed in Mandatorial they are to be provided with a one- time only package of work that may consist of missing or failed assignments and/or assessments. This work is due at a time designated by the teacher, but most likely on Friday of the week it is provided or the following Monday. If no work is returned then teacher discretion determines if the student is given additional opportunities. 3. The work made up by the student receives a maximum of sixty percent of the value of the assignment. 4. If the work is completed and the student maintains an F grade in the class they are no longer eligible for Mandatorial because there is no longer an opportunity to improve their grade.
Assignments and Progress Reports 1. Late assignments are not accepted except for illness or special circumstances. 2. When missing assignments and/or failed tests drop a student’s grade to an F they are placed in Mandatorial with the opportunity to improve their grade. 3. Progress reports are sent on the 3rd, 5th and 7th week. 3rd D and F, 5th All, 7th F only.

While on school grounds. 2. While going to or coming from school. 3. During the lunch period, whether on or off campus. 4. During or while going to, or coming from a school sponsored activity. Amended 1986 Laws, Ch. 111 and 1136. Effective 1/1/87. Each day of off-campus suspension equals 3 demerits. Each day of on-campus suspension equals 2 demerits. Each individual class suspension equals 1 demerit.

Quarter Privileges: Assemblies, dances, games, field trips 1st Quarter -- 5 demerits Loss of all privileges 2nd Quarter-- 10 demerits Loss of all privileges 3rd Quarter -- 15 demerits Loss of all privileges 4th Quarter -- 20 demerits Loss of all privileges

2. A student has an opportunity to remove demerits and subsequently regain privileges through an arranged contract. The contract is invalid without a parent/guardian signature. A student must remain demerit-free for ten (10) consecutive school days in order to remove one (1) demerit. A student may also participate in ‘community service’ after school to reduce demerits. This is a school beautification program in which a young person can reduce a demerit with one hour of uninterrupted work. Please see the vice principal for both programs.
DRESS CODE (Ed. Code 35183 and Board Policy 5132) The Orcutt Union School District School Board and the staff of Lakeview Junior High School believe that appropriate dress and grooming contribute to a productive learning environment. Students have the right to make individual choices from a wide range of clothing and grooming styles, but they must not present a health or safety hazard or a distraction which would interfere with the educational process. With these considerations in mind, the policy concerning dress and grooming is as follows: *Head coverings including hats, hoods, scarves, and sun-protective head coverings will be allowed as long as the following guidelines are followed: they must be worn appropriately, must not have inappropriate slogans or illustrations, must not be worn in class and must not cause a problem or distraction. *No saggy/baggy pants. (Waist and inseam must match body measurements. Pants may not drag on the ground. Belts may not hang down over pant loops in “gang” fashion. *No bare midriffs (No skin showing. When arms are raised the shirt/blouse must meet top of pants), no spaghetti straps, halter tops, low cut tops, tank tops of less than two inches at the shoulder, tube tops, or see-through/fish-net tops. Clothes shall be sufficient to conceal undergarments at all times. A jacket covering the top does not mean it is not a dress code violation. *No chains or spiked jewelry. Commercial jewelry is acceptable. *All skirts, dresses or short must reach to the middle finger tip when arms are held straight down at side. *No jeans, shorts, or other apparel with rips or holes that are not from normal wear. No frayed pant bottoms. *No clothing that promotes or advertises drugs, alcohol or tobacco use. No clothing that depicts obscenity or lewdness. No clothing that is inflammatory in regard to race, religion or heritage or represents anarchy. No clothing that identifies with gang affiliation. *Hair shall be clean and neatly groomed. Hair may not be sprayed by any coloring that would drip when wet. If hair color detracts from the learning environment, a student may be asked to return hair to a normal shade. *No open-toed shoes such as sandals or Birkenstocks will be allowed in home economics, industrial arts, science labs or physical education classes due to safety concerns. No high heel or elevated shoes may be worn in P.E. No flip-flops or slippers are allowed at any time during school hours. Shoes must be worn at all times while at school. *Any clothing, jewelry, accessories, name brands, or manner of grooming, or combination thereof that might denote membership in, affiliation or sympathy with a gang or a group representing anarchy, is prohibited. *Any questionable grooming that affects the learning process or is a distraction to the learning process will be dealt with by the administration. Demerit detentions will be issued for infractions against this dress code.
***Dress for social functions and activities is the same as normal school dress, unless determined by the sponsor of the function and announced prior to the occasion.
Many extra-curricular activities are offered throughout the school year at Lakeview Junior High School. These are activities that a student can choose to participate in before, during or after school. Extra-curricular activities include cheerleading (8th), volleyball (7th & 8th), basketball (7th & 8th), track (7th & 8th), ASB (Associated Student Body - 7th & 8th), drama (7th & 8th), and chorus (7th & 8th). Extra-curricular activities are not graded, but a student must maintain good grades and citizenship to continue with the activity. To participate in any extra-curricular activity is a privilege. This privilege may be revoked for inappropriate behavior. Some extra-curricular activities require a try-out for the student. To try-out for one of these activities (cheerleading, volleyball, basketball, ASB-8th), a student must have a minimum GPA (grade point average) of 2.0. Every two (2) weeks on specified days, each student who participates in one these activities will be required to pick up a grade check in the office, first thing in the morning, and then submit it completely filled out to their coach that afternoon. If a student receives a “U” in academics or a “U” or two “N’s” in citizenship on the bi-weekly grade check, or an “F” or a “U” or two “N’s” on the report card, he/she will automatically be placed on probation and suspended from the activity for a two (2) week period. If the grade point average, the “F”, “N’s” or “U” are not raised by the next grade check, the student will be removed from the activity. Students are allowed one (1) probationary period per activity. Cheerleaders and student body officers are allowed one (1) probationary period per semester.
The formal exercise of graduation on stage is an honor and a privilege. To earn this privilege, the student must meet the following criteria: 1. A passing grade in each class. 2. No academic “F”, or “U” in citizenship, during the 4th quarter of the 8th grade. 3. No more than 16% of the enrolled days missed. (29 days) 4. No more than 29 demerits*.
*Demerits are pro-rated for students enrolling after the start of school year.
1. Students can expect homework a minimum of three (3) days per week from each class. An hour and a half to two hours for all assigned work is common Monday through Thursday. 2. Students are expected to complete and turn in all written homework. It is expected to be neat and on time to receive credit. No homework, or incomplete homework, may result in a referral. No telephone calls from the office will be allowed for forgotten homework. 3. Students who will be absent for an extended period of time (5 days or more), should complete an independent study contract. The school must be notified at least three (3) days in advance if an independent study contract is to be issued. All assingments for each subject are due on the first school day following the ending date of the agreement. 4. Students are required to have their assignment books with them throughout the school day and are to fill in their homework assignments daily in ink. Assignment books may be purchased independently or in the school office for $3.00. Students must carry an assignment book in their binders at all times. Failure to do so may result in a referral. Parents should check assignment books and completed assignments daily.
PROGRESS REPORTS AND REPORT CARDS 1. Progress reports are given to any student whose grade is a “D”, “F” or “U” during the 5th week of each quarter. All progress reports must be signed by a parent/guardian and returned to the individual teacher by the specified date. 2. Report cards will be handed out at scheduled parent conferences at the end of each quarter. Fourth quarter report cards will be given to students on the last day of school. 3. Those students who have earned a 3.5 GPA or above, and have received no “F” or “U”, are eligible for Honor Roll recognition.
Be safe, responsible and respectful! School rules are necessary to provide a safe environment for learning and to protect each student’s right to attend school without being threatened, injured or deprived of an education. School rules are to be followed by all students at all times. Detentions or suspensions will be assigned for unacceptable behavior. 1. Keep the school neat and clean both indoors and out at all times. Trash goes in the trash cans. Recyclables go in the recycle bins. Loss of snack break privilege may result if trash is not controlled. 2. Walk at all times on campus, except when in assigned areas for physical education or sports. 3. Show courtesy and respect for all students and adults at all times. Do not touch other people or their property. Feet and chair legs on the floor at all times. Be on time and ready to work when the tardy bell rings. 4. Keep restrooms neat and clean. No food or drink in the restrooms for health reasons. 5. Use the bicycle lanes when entering or leaving campus. Walk the bike out to the bicycle lane. Do not ride in the parking lot or on campus other than in designated areas. Bicycle helmets are a state law. 6. Inappropriate bus behavior will result in loss of bus privilege and possible disciplinary action at school. 7. Eating or drinking (other than water) is allowed only during nutrition, lunch and at teacher discretion in a classroom . At lunch all food and drink must be eaten in designated areas, at quad tables or in the cafeteria. Drink machines may not be used during lunch time. Gum, candy and sunflower seeds are not allowed at any time on campus. No one should be on the north “field” side of the building or on the black top with food or drink at any time. 8. During nutrition, no one should be on the blacktop or north side of the buildings. 9. Body contact such as, but not limited to, wrestling, play fighting, shoving, kissing, holding hands or hugging are not allowed on campus at any time. There is a “no tolerance” policy for aggressive body contact. 10. Safekeeping of anything brought from home is the student’s responsibility. Collectible cards, games or electronic devices should never be brought to school. 11. Any item that distracts from the learning process or is a possible danger, distraction or invasion of the privacy of others may be confiscated and the parent/guardian will have to claim it, except in the case of cameras where film will need to be destroyed prior to the return of the camera. Sharp pointed pairs of scissors, cameras, cell phones with camera capabilities, walkie-talkies, laser pens, aerosol sprays, disc players, boomboxes, electronic equipment, toys, radios, disc players and CDS are to be left home. They are not allowed on campus at all. 12. No markers or other products whose fumes are labeled toxic or have other warning labeling are allowed on campus. Aerosol containers are not allowed at school. 13. No glass containers for food or drink may be brought on campus. 14. Bikes and skate boards, if brought to school, may not be used while on campus and must be locked up during the school day. No skateboards will be kept in the office. Demerit detentions will be issued for infractions against the school rules and conduct code.
Honesty is just one of the life skills reinforced at Lakeview. Cheating is taking another’s work as your own or providing work/answers to another student, i.e., Copying homework or allowing another student to copy your homework. Copying another student’s test or allowing someone to copy your test. Plagiarism (copying from a printed source without the author’s permission). Forgery (writing someone else’s signature). Using unauthorized information during a test. CHEATING IS NOT WORKING IN TEAMS OR GROUPS WHEN ASSIGNED BY A TEACHER. It is a teacher’s first responsibility to try to prevent cheating by any means possible, including, but not limited to: Having students cover tests with a sheet of paper. Giving different tests. Designing tests so that parts may be covered. Separating students physically (rows rather than groups). Giving verbal warnings.
Consequences of cheating:
First Offense Take paper(s) away and give to assigning teacher. Give zeroes to all students involved. Assigning teacher issues detention to all students involved. Second Offense State Education Code 48900 (k) states that a student may be suspended for willfully defying the valid authority of supervisors, teachers, administrators and other school officials. A student may be issued a detention and parents notified that a suspension may ensue if the situation continues. A zero will be given to all students involved. Third Offense Same as first offense, as well as... A one day suspension may be requested by the teacher. A conference may be requested with the student and parent(s). 1. Students arriving late to school without a parent/guardian excuse will receive a demerit detention. If being dropped off, parent must come into the office and sign the student in. 2. Students must be in their seats and ready for class when the tardy bell rings or they are considered tardy. Every tardy equals one (1) detention which equals one (1) demerit.
1. All students are responsible for textbooks issued to them. Students are expected to keep textbooks covered at all times. Do not leave backpacks where things may be stolen from them. 2. When property of the district is lent to students, it must be returned in a timely manner, with no more than normal wear and tear. If the property has been willfully cut, defaced or otherwise damaged, or if the student fails to return it, the district will withhold the student’s grades, diploma and transcripts until the student or parent/guardian has paid all damages. As provided by the law, the parent/guardian of a minor shall be liable for all damages by the minor’s conduct. Education Code 48904.
CLOSED CAMPUS Lakeview is a closed campus. Once students arrive on campus, students are not allowed to leave unless they are personally checked out by a parent, guardian, or someone listed on their emergency card. Students may not leave with anyone not on their emergency card unless specific written permission is given the morning of the day on which a student will be checked out by someone not on the emergency card. Be sure contact numbers are correct on the emergency card, as a call for verification of the request may be made.
ASSEMBLIES General student body assemblies are held during the school year in the multi-use room or the gym. Only students with appropriate behavior will be allowed to attend.
CHANGE OF ADDRESS--TELEPHONE--EMERGENCY INFORMATION If you move or if emergency card information changes at any time during the school year, please notify the office as soon as possible so that school records can be corrected. It is imperative that all records be current in case of an emergency.
COUNSELING AND GUIDANCE REQUESTS Counseling services are available to all students. A counselor from the Santa Maria Youth and Family Center will be on site two days per week. Please contact the vice principal to discuss any need in this area. Parent permission is required for any ongoing counseling service.
HEALTH/PHYSICAL EDUCATION Lakeview has locker room facilities; therefore, students are required to dress out in gym clothes. A complete health and P. E. Program is provided for all students. Physical education is required of all students unless excused in writing by a doctor. A modified physical education program is provided for those who can’t physically participate in class.
HEALTH SERVICES The school nurse and aids are in the school for health supervision and consultation. When not on campus a health professional is on call for emergencies. If a student becomes ill at school, the teacher will allow the student to go to the office where they will be cared for. Medication, including aspirin, CANNOT be given at school unless it has been prescribed by a physician with detailed instructions for use. Medication forms are available in the office. All medication must be brought to the office, along with the signed medication form, and will be dispensed from there.
ITEMS BROUGHT FROM HOME Money, expensive bicycles, scooters or other valuable personal items may be easily lost or stolen at school. Students are responsible for items brought to school as the school cannot assume responsibility. It is the preference of the school that such items be left at home to avoid loss.
LOST AND FOUND All lost and found articles are kept in the multi-use room. Articles which are not claimed within a reasonable time period will be donated to charity. Students are responsible for checking “Lost and Found” for property lost at school.
LIBRARY AND COMPUTER RESEARCH CENTER (CRC) The CRC resources are available during school. Books are checked out for two weeks at a time. Books may be rechecked out at the end of the two weeks. Students not returning books on time may be issued a detention. Lost books must be paid for. Computers may be reserved for research and word processing. Students using computers must fill out a “Computer User” form before using any school computer.
LUNCH Hot lunches are served and are to be eaten in the cafeteria or in designated outdoor locations. Each student is expected to maintain good table manners. The student must pick up all his/her trash when he/she has finished eating and is ready to leave the area. Noontime supervisors are on duty during lunch. Students are expected to obey the supervisors or receive disciplinary action.
NOON INTRAMURAL PROGRAM Noontime intramural programs are designed to provide activity during lunch time for all students wishing to participate. Competition in team sports between either homerooms or teams chosen from sign-ups will be organized.
TELEPHONE USE The office phone is not for student use, unless it is for an emergency or illness. Students must plan ahead. They may not call home for forgotten homework. Cell phones must be turned off when a student arrives at school and not turned on again until school ends. The use of cell phones during schools hours is prohibited.
SCHOOL SPONSORED ACTIVITIES Pupils attending school activities after school hours are expected to behave appropriately. It is the responsibility of the individual student to see that a ride home is available WITHIN 15 MINUTES OF THE EVENT ENDING. Violation of this rule may result in the pupil’s exclusion from the next school activity.
VISITORS All visitors on campus are required to check in at the office and wear a “visitor” badge before visiting or observing anyone on campus. A classroom visitation requires 24 hour notice to the office.
Student visitors are not allowed on campus during school hours. Lakeview dances are for Lakeview students only. Visitors will not be allowed to attend at any time. STUDENT DROP OFF AND PICK UP We have two separate parking lots. The one in front of the office is for staff parking and bus loading and unloading. If a student is ill or being picked up or dropped off for an appointment, a parent may park in the office parking lot in the 10 min. zone. All other student pick-ups or student drop-offs are in the gym parking lot.
SUPERVISION is from 8:30 a.m. to 3:30 p.m. Students should not be on campus earlier than 8:25 a.m. and should be picked up no later than 3:30 p.m. unless they are taking part in an organized and supervised program such as sports practice, cheerleading practice, chorus, band or are serving a detention.
Parents coming to drop off or pick up students before and after school should use the parking lot in front of the gym. Please be sure to pull into a parking space or pull to the far end of the lot. DO NOT STOP IN THE ENTRANCE OR HINDER THE FLOW OF TRAFFIC INTO THE LOT. This is a safety issue. The parking lot gridlock eases within 10 minutes of the end of school. It is sometimes convenient to delay student pick-up by a few minutes in order to avoid the parking lot gridlock.
